E. I. Couse

A Native Fisherman

E. I. Couse, A Native Fisherman, 1917, Oil on canvas, 30 x 36 inches, Koshare Museum.

In this painting, Couse depicts Taos Pueblo model Jerry Mirabal rod fishing along the edge of a stream. Historically, Pueblo people used nets, dams, and ditches to catch fish. By the time the artists arrived, Anglos, Nuevomexicanos, and Pueblos practiced bait and fly fishing. Sharp, Ufer, Hennings, and Couse all depicted Pueblo men fishing. Many of the TSA artists were also avid fishermen themselves and often used Dunton as their fishing guide
