Artists often create composites of different locales and subjects within the same composition. Berninghaus lived on La Loma, a hill west of Taos Plaza, where the San Antonio de Padua capilla (chapel) stands today. The chapel on La Loma has a pitched roof and a bell tower, unlike the building depicted here. Also, when viewing the San Antonio de Padua chapel from this angle, mountains are not visible behind it.
However, another area capilla looked remarkably similar to the one in the painting: Nuestra Senora del Rosario de Talpa, also called the Duran Chapel, built in 1838 and no longer standing. It had a stepped facade and a bell niche, and the mountains near Talpa to the southeast strongly resemble the mountains in the background of the Berninghaus painting. Duran Chapel had a rich history in Talpa, including its association with the famed Padre Antonio José Martinez.
