Oscar E. Berninghaus also moved easily between fine art and commercial image-making. His quasi-historical scenes for Anheuser-Busch advertising (as in the 1914 booklet shown on this page) transformed Western imagery into mass-produced promotional material tapping into consumers’ desire for a nostalgic past. His images brought frontier subjects into saloons, businesses, and homes on a national scale.

The St. Louis Globe-Democrat was a daily print newspaper published from 1852 to 1986. This November 12, 1922, Sunday gravure section reproduces six of Oscar Berninghaus’s images, bringing them to households and public spaces across the region.
