Catharine Carter Critcher

Indian Drummer

Catharine Carter Critcher, Indian Drummer, oil on canvas, 18 x 17 in. Courtesy of Amanda and Eric Garland.

As with most female painters of the time, Critcher was encouraged to paint women and children, and most of her New Mexico work reflects this. Male figures are rare in Critcher’s Taos oeuvre. Like other TSA members, she often interpreted Native American art-making practices, in this case traditional drum music. This drummer is probably intended to be read as Navajo (Diné), with his distinctive moccasins, velveteen shirt, and specific head wrap style.
