Oscar E. Berninghaus

Indian Camp on Lucero

Oscar E. Berninghaus, Indian Camp on Lucero, oil on board, 8 x 12 in. Collection of Koshare Art Museum, La Junta, CO.

Berninghaus frequently included 10,000-foot Lucero Peak in his canvases. When seen from the village of Taos looking northeast, Lucero appears like a human canine tooth to the left of Taos Mountain. Berninghaus camped often in the Sangre de Cristos on the Rio Lucero, typically with other TSA artists and with models from Taos Pueblo.
